You control and monitor a project using people. Software is just a way to record what is happening. You can't make decisions based on what some software program says. It just spits out what some programmer assumed would be the right answer for a given set of circumstances.
I have seen it time and time again, someone using a software program as the excuse when their project was in trouble rather than admitting that they just didn't do a good job of looking after things themselves.
